The last day.
As most of us prepared to leave work for the Thanksgiving holiday, over 60 people boxed up their desks and walked through the door for the last time. The layoffs had been announced over a month ago, but today was their last day.
While we worry about side dishes for tomorrow’s dinner, they’re thinking of how to pay for dinner … mortgage … car … and provide for their family.
Tonight, I say a prayer for those who were laid off; I also thank God for everything I have.
*speechless*

Aww, Jen! It’s so important we take time to remember SO many people who are going thru this. And def. count our blessings.
@jediwa72 - Very true … I’m keeping them all in my thoughts and prayers.
How saw. It is very important to remember those less fortunate during this holiday season.
I’m thankful
Sad. Canadian Thanksgiving was in October, but we should be thankful everyday. (:
Sad way to dive into the holidays
People are numbers; numbers are people. Easy to forget when looking at the big picture.
Very sad. We should always be thankful for the things we’ve been blessed with.
Tis a sad reminder of reality in this opening of the holiday season.
yes, i am also thankful for Jen and her lovely blue eyes.
I like your point of view, here.
it really is so sad. i am so sorry that it is happening to so many people.
your profile pic is awesome! your hair and eyes are beautiful!
that is so sad
You’re so right. Wow, the thoughts this makes me have. Man, this makes me want to cook for everybody who can’t afford to it for themselves … I actually saw a lady on the news today who couldn’t afford Thanksgiving last year and had to eat at a soup kitchen or something of the sort. In the last year she has pulled herself out of that hole and this year she put an ad on Craigslist offering dinner for anyone who could come and she’s expecting like 34 people for Thanksgiving. It’s her way of giving back.
@cre13 - Wow … that’s absolutely amazing!
Wanna go in halfsies on a huge dinner for everyone?
@BarelyJen - sure!
:/
We can always imagine worse!! The unimaginable happened today in Mombai India! How sad that this is in the name of religion!
ok, this is totally off topic from everything ur saying here but do u live in michigan because im visiting my mom up here and i saw a chick driving a truck who looked exactly like you,….
like no lie
@TheRadnessQueen - haha! nope, not in michigan … in fact, i’m a bit further south than that
… but how awesome would that have been? (plus, it sounds like i have a twin out there!)
We actually had a local business lay off 80 people last week. Instead of wondering where all the unemployment would go, I wondered what their holidays would be like. =/
The publishing company “where I grew up” (I worked there from just after my 21st birthday till my thirty-first birthday)… the company is my age (almost to the date!)…41 years old…
Closed its doors today.
I haven’t worked there in ten years now, but that was where I met a lot of the friends I hold close to me now. I had fun there, I learned a lot (and not just about publishing!) there…
And I feel terrible for all of the people (nearly 200) who are now forced into the job market.
This is so very true… It has been a hard year for many people… Be thankful… Don’t forsaken anything you have…
Wow… what a sad day that must have been. My heart goes out to all who left!
That is sad. I’m afraid we are going to see a lot more of it over the next few years, though.
That makes me feel just a little bit guilty for running for the door as soon as possible…
That must have been rough seeing that happen to them.
Tough times for sure.
Thanks for the reminder of the human side.
Hear, hear.
Jinkies. What crappy timing! :-/
Yes indeed, Jen. That must be hard to watch, but it’s a reminder that none of us should take our good fortune for granted. Ditto your prayer, and a happy Thanksgiving to you!
How depressing. My dad works for kraft and he has only worked two weeks this month and will only work one week in dec. We will probably be homeless come dec. True story.
Xo
@BarelyJen - YOU DO!!! she looked exactly liked you and she had a nice truck…. i was jealous
We should all be thankful we weren’t placed in their positions, that would have been and I bet still is, hard.
what a downer.
hmm…thanks for letting me know about something I can’t change. Really, what good did it do to report this kind of news to people? Did it make you feel like you were doing you’re part, at least. “raising awareness”? Is that it? b/c I feel it was just pointless. It served only to depress people who can’t change anything. This blog isn’t going to get food on the tables or jobs for these people who just got layed off so I just don’t see the point.
@BeautifulB_227 - Most of the time, my blog is written about things that occur in my life … things that I have to directly deal with and face. This wasn’t “reported” from some other job in some far off place that doesn’t effect meāthis was about my friends and family that were laid off the day before Thanksgiving.
Yes, it’s depressing, but it’s something I needed to talk about for ME. For the past several months, I’ve discussed layoffs, both when my father got laid off and when these occurred … and how it could have been me without a job. Ultimately, this is closing a chapter on those very personal discussions.
