  • My new goal: become a bitch.

I think I owe it to myself to become a “B” … well, a skinny bitch, at least. I’ve been inspired and am now on a mission to look and feel my best.

Here’s the thing. Due to a variety of medical maladies, I’ve been overweight and unhappy with my physical state for several years. This isn’t about vanity (although I would love to look uber-hot), but my health.

There are a plethora of reasons I could have lost my baby. Chromosomes didn’t jive together, God felt it wasn’t the right time and/or my body isn’t “up to code.”

At right: me, 10 years ago. I was slender, healthy and happy. Today, that poor girl is buried under additional, unneeded pounds. I must save her!

I know how hard I’ve worked to lose what I have over the years, so I’m not blaming myself persay, but I know that I can do even more to get myself healthy.

I can’t rely on others to get my ass in shape — this task is up to me. Only I decide what goes in my mouth. It’s up to me to make better choices for my health, and the health of my future baby.

Given that I’ve been on perpetual bed rest lately, I’ve been catching up on my reading. In the queue:

The Skinny Bitch phenom was started by two beautiful vegans hell-bent on getting their no-nonsense advice out for all to hear. Their straight-to-the-point advice and “slap in the face” attitude really grabbed my intention. Put down the candy bar? Okay! Of course I don’t want a fat ass forever! You’re so right, SBs!

The Organic Food Shopper’s Guide is a really informative book that explains how to shop for, store and utilize your food to the fullest potential. I’ve been pouring over it, compiling a shopping list of my organic “must haves.” Plus, I’ve already set aside quite a few recipes to try next week. Yum!

The Student’s Vegetarian Cookbook intrigued me. It’s written with the poor college student in mind, but why not have a poor writer take full advantage of its secrets? It teaches you how to use common ingredients in a more healthful, tasty way — who couldn’t use that advice? (They also have a vegan companion book available, but I’m not too interested.)

I’m not going vegan or fully vegetarian — anyone who knows me I can eat the crap out of some ribs or homemade hamburgers! — but I am converting to a more organic, less meat lifestyle. It amazes me that I’ve put crap in my body for 26 years … and I’m not talking about the sodas and candy (though I’m beyond guilty), but things that we’ve been told were good for us: milk, veggies full of pesticides and meat with more problems than I care to discuss. These are things we’ve always heard in the background of society, but never paid much mind to. Well, my mind is beginning to open. It’s time for a new way of life.

I just want to become the healthiest version of myself possible. I want to enjoy the nutrients my food has to offer, without all the crap (or less of it, at least). I want to lose 40-50 pounds before having a child. 2010 has always been our “year” for the baby, so I’ve got AT LEAST 11 months to get in shape.

Has anyone ever tried eating all organic and/or vegetarian/vegan?
What was your experience with it?

Side note: I’m also reading “Marley and Me” since I can’t get out to the theater … so far, so inspiring.

  • well, let’s make a deal.  you can give ME your ribs and homemade burgers, and you can have what’s left when i’m finished.

and i want you to be the healthiest possible version of yourself, too.  whatever makes Jen happiest, i say.

like… receiving this comment!  awwwww.  i try.

  • Yeah… I tried being a vegetarian… It didn’t last… but I do it every other week now… I’ve lost a lot of weight doing that. That’s what I suggest.

  • Never done organic or vegetarian.  Good luck   You can do it!

  • I took the Skinny Bitch in the Kitch book out of the library once. Then I saw it was all vegan, and suddenly it became less appealing.

  • skinny bitch in the kitch!
hahaha i saw that book at borders.
    thought the title was hysterical

  • I read: “My new goal: become rich”. And I was like, hey, how does she do it?!

You looked a bit like Jennifer Aniston.

Meat isn’t bad, you just have to choose the right one!

  • @TheBigShowAtUD - awww, I miss you, Mattie. I’m gonna have to marathon read all the epic blogs you’ve produced in my absence!

@nattata - LOL, really? That’s very lovely of you to say!

  • Being healthy is a great goal, and I think it’s even better that you don’t want to be skinny just for the looks. I have never tried being vegetarian, but for me it would be a very unhealthy route because even though I currently don’t eat a lot of meat, I don’t eat other things to give me protein like beans. So, that lifestyle can be both healthy and unhealthy. Also, being organic is nice, but it can be very expensive. Maybe choose some things that you want to be organic and get others that aren’t.

  • plethora, I haven’t heard that word in a long time.  I want to read the book: “how to become a tyrant” so I can suppress people and dominate them by impossing my will on them, but in a none tyrant way.

  • I’ve never tried going vegetarian but I really don’t eat red meat that much. I love it but it almost grosses me out to cook it (kind of strange, eh?). I’d love to eat more organic food but it’s so expensive that we can’t always fit it into our budget (organic meat seems to be especially expensive. Good luck! I’m anxious to see how it goes for you and then I may give it a try.

  • Dude, a girl I know bought that Skinny Bitch In The Kitchen book when we were at B&N. :D

  • I tried being vegetarian for a while.  It didn’t last long, being that I swam everyday for my school and without the carbs, I didn’t have the same amount of energy.  It was probably just the timing, though.  I’m thinking about trying it again.

    Good luck!  :)

  • i dont want to rub it in, but when the time comes theres a skinny bitch book for pregnant ladies too…

i might have to check out those veg cookbooks… storage is my main problem. goes bad so quickly..

  • and oh yeah. sometime we should have a xanga BBQ with ribs and burgers. totally some of my favorites.

  • No. I eat everything except vegetables (though I eat lettuce on my hamburgers).

I’m kind of a fruitaholic, but I couldn’t survive without meat.

  • @Garistotle - Yeah, the vegan thing is a bit too much for my liking, but the overall practices they share make sense. LOL, I’m gonna pick and choose what I use.

@you_were_the_song_all_along - I’m going to have to be super careful, given my health issues … fortuantely, my step-mom is a nurse, and my friend, a nutritionist, so I’ll look to them for additional guidance (as well as my doctor, of course!)

    @deathtothenewworldorder - oooh, a non-tyrant way … can I be your number two?

@TheCheshireGrins - It’s very expensive … “fortunately” my MIL bargain shops for organic, so I’m hoping to get some pointers from her on shopping smart. I’ll definitely have to pick and choose what I eat organically. It definitely won’t be 100% overnight. I will let you know how it goes, though!

  • @makethemakersmile - HAHAHA, I know there is! That book is what got me turned on to the SB series … before then, I just thought it was a stupid fad (which I’m sure it still is, but dammit, I give in!) The Orgainic Guide tells you how to store each food to maximize their life … I’ve been storing things wrong for so long!

    @icicle84 - Mmmmm, fruit!

  • ive given up pork. but i havent given up other meats.

  • I’ve been a vegetarian for the last 7 years. It’s worth it. The biggest difference I found pre/post making the change to being meat free is how easy my periods got. No more cramps, barely any bloating… it makes my excuses of “that time of the month” go out the window because my hormones are really not that bad.

My suggestion – if you’re going to be exercising alot, don’t skimp on your carbs. You need at least 80 grams of carbs a day for your brain to work and function properly. Just be careful that you don’t go overboard, as a low meat diet tends to beef up the carbs for the sake of calories. It’s a balancing act, but I bet you can do it. :)

    Good Luck!

  • @Levanna - I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re a beautiful, skinny “B”, so if you can do it, so can I! Thank you so much for the advice—it really helps to hear that other people can adhere to a more healthful lifestyle and really succeed at it!

  • @MadisonLinh - Maddie dahling! Great photo, as always

  • I was raised vegetarian.  In my experience, when done correctly, it’s very healthy.  Like any other diet, it’s about balance.

  • Well, I’m vegetarian, and I try to eat as healthily as I can, though my love for cheese often gets in the way.

And wow, you really look gorgeous in that picture.
     I’m jealous.

  •  There are many misconceptions about organic food. If you want me to share I shall but if not that’s fine too. But….you don’t need to eat organic food to be healthy!

Good luck and keep your chin up!!!!!

  • You’re only going to yell at me, but I think you look fabulous as is!

  • @XxWiltedRosexX - no, please share! I know there are downsides to it as well, so the more prepared I am, the better!

  • @SladeTheGreyFox - Oooooh, double nookie for you!

  • My mom is a vegetarian, and I tried it for a while – unfortunately I am borderline hypoglycemic (or I was, I haven’t been watching myself like I should be so its probably not borderline anymore) and the vegetarian lifestyle just didn’t give me enough protein to keep my blood sugar stable.

  • I could never be a vegetrain, gotta have meat, losing weight takes a lot of effort, but never give up!!

  • @BarelyJen - yeah, im SURE that i have been…

  • @BarelyJen - Aweeeee thanks. :) It’s work and I’m around if you need support or someone to complain to.

  • @BarelyJen - lol hay DAHLIN….the weird things is that i use that term a lot in real life…cood it be that we are both actually normal?

  • Good lord no.  I enjoy being healthy, none of that unhealthy vegan bs for me. Or any other fad diet that forgets that humans are omnivores. As to organic, we have a garden, fruit trees, blueberries, black berries, and all sort of yummy stuff. So yes I think it is better for you. If not better for you, it certainly tastes a lot better. If it comes in a box or bag, I rarely eat it. And I work out a lot. I love to swim, when I miss a few days I start to feel lazy.

  • Mind over matter.  I already lost 6 lbs just eating no more refined sugar foods and oils (candy bars, chips, sodas, fast food, etc).

God its been hard though.  Warren is another good guy to talk to about it, he did a detox diet that made me cringe to watch.

  • @BarelyJen - Okie dokie. Like I said you can still be healthy and not eat organically. Organic food still has pesticides applied to it but they organic pesticides that are applied at higher dosages more than regular food. A lot of people buy milk with “no artifical growth hormones” or rbst.I don’t know if you know much about dairy cows but it just helps the cow produce more milk and be more efficent…it does not affect the milk you drink..there’s nothing to worry about there.

The thing is with organic foods you are pretty much paying more for the same food that isn’t organic. A lot of people switch over because they think as well that organic food is better than GMO’s but they are both harmful to the environment.

I hope you don’t think I’m trying to be negative about people eating organic foods…that’s not the case it’s just a lot of people are misinformed about it and the media and other’s preach about how great it is but don’t really inform the people about what they are eating. Like I said…organic and gmo foods are both good and harmful. Just depends on what you want.

Hope I helped…sorry if it seemed like a lecture.

  • @XxWiltedRosexX - Wow there were a lot of typos in there…sorry about that.

  • @AnallyNoble - It’s more than simple mind over matter for me. If it really were that easy, I’d be a stick! But HOORAY! SIX POUNDS! SEXXY SHAUN IS ON THE LOOSE!

  • i wish i had your determination.  am DEFINITELY not enjoying my current state of fatassness.  you go girl.

  • Yes, I’ve done the organic thing and it seemed pointless.

And, NO, I could NEVER go without meat.

  • Haha, sounds like fun! You can do it!

  • I was vegetarian for a while, but it left me frequently tired. I don’t think I was at my best.

Probably the best thing to do is cut back on meat, receiving protein from peanut butter and other such things. I don’t eat meat every day.

  • I am working on it also,I will cheer you on.

  • being a vegan does have it’s flaws.  i mean it doesn’t mean you’ll loose weight.  i took a nutrition class, and this is from experience.  just eath healthy.  don’t eath much carbs, and meat and eat more veggies.  the protein does help a lot!  so maybe something like the atkins, except not massive amount of meat, and some carbs, like brown rice, whole wheat bread.  and exercise..and not much sweets.  once a week maybe, and no soda..just juice and water.  i use to be 120..and that’s when i did just that.  so try it..you just have to comitt…think i will too.

  • I will gladly take 30 to 40 lbs from you. Just tell me HOW and I’ll be right there. I have been called toothpick, stringbean, stilts, you name it. And at 6’10″ of course not just stringbean, but beanpole. My wife wishes to do the same thing. I love her the way she is, but for healths sake, she probably does need to drop some weight. She weighed about 115 when we got married and now is around 170. At 5’6″ she probably healthwise should be around 135. I soooo wish I could trade some of my skinny for her fat. To bad it isn’t that easy.

  • good for you girl! i’m trying to lose a lot of weight oo, so I know what you’re going through!

if you’re having trouble starting, I have a really good hint that helped me start: what you do is for 3 days you eat only green veggies and eggs and lean meats (like grilled chicken or fish). no salt or condiments like that (that was hard for me!) and you can eat as much as you like, but no carbs or fruit! and just do that for a few days, and you’re body will go into a state of ketosis where your body uses excess fat to fuel yourself.

and you don’t have to eat all of the meat; you can use egg substitutes instead if you want.
hope that helps! good luck! :D

  • I generally don’t eat that much red meat, but I eat lots of chicken. It’s better for you, and some you can buy even say right on the package that they don’t use growth hormones.

I’m very much a sugar bug, so to get my diet in better shape, I bough Special K bars and fat free chocolate pudding and fat free yogurt instead of snack cakes.

I also cut down on the cokes- I keep juice, water, tea, and milk in my fridge, and will only get a coke if I’m out to eat. Cokes bloat you like nobody’s business, so once I had flushed it all out of my system, I dropped a couple of pounds from water weight.

That said- GOOD LUCK!! I’m cheering for you!

  • Great post. I love constructive blogging. I really need to shed a little bit of the handles to get ready for summer. I hate trying to lose weight, but realizing you have accomplished it is one of the best feelings I have ever felt. I was going to write this long comment on why I agree with your outlook, but it got too long. POST!

  • My mom tells me not to buy meat from any grocery store (she claims Publix is the only one here that sells decent meat). I haven’t given into her yet as we are trying to struggle with money as it is — I figure after I get all of the bills in order and get everything situated (as we have a roommate moving out this weekend & technically we will be living in a house, just us as a family, for the first time ever). My mom is like you with this — she prefers to buy veggies and fruits from fruit stands on the road from local farmers. They seem to have better veggies and fruits too. =)

Good luck with that & hopefully I can get on the ball with this as well, with eating healthier & better food.

  • While I can’t and no sane would recommend it… I’ve had grand success losing weight due to Acidosis brought on by diabetes.   if you’d like to get excited about something that shouldn’t kill you:
    http://www.amazon.com/Reference-Guide-Essential-Eleventh-October/dp/B001IW3J4S
Orange oil (aromatherapy…essential oils) **not reviewed/approved by the FDA just melts under skin fat and boosts overall energy level

I’m a fabrric bag carrying shopper of Vitamin Cottage and have been for years-absolutely agog over sunshine market too.  it isn’t about organic to me- it is about taste- some stuff tastes good and is justifyably priced. but the fun isn’t the healthy it is something I can actually eat… I like the trips to the library for maybe an Idian cookbook or a native american book on how to cook a stuffed pumpkin….mmmm or

I warn you that one law behind a healthy change is that until you’ve done it awhile- budget accordingly as it can double your overall budget for awhile…oh, and I think your attractive…but your married sothat ruins most of the droll for me ;)
    good luck

  • @Uncious - LOL, thank you for the compliment!

  • I was a vegan for a few months, and a vegetarian for half a year, I stopped after I got pregnant and didn’t go back yet.. I’m not sure why.

  • I think you are beautiful, honestly. But I also can understand the desire to shed the excess weight, to get back where you were. Go You! Im rooting for you. Never went veggie, it just isnt my style. I gotta have meat and potatos.

  • I have a dirty doz list that helps make it more affordable. I’ll look for it & share.

  • If you don’t mind some advice, just don’t go -too- extreme with your dieting.  But seeing how you aren’t going meat free, you probably get that.  You can be an unhealthy skinny person just as well as someone unhealthy that has more weight on them.

Of course, even an organic diet can include meat.  Bring on the free range and organic meats.  :)   If you have not had organic and free range meats, vegetables, ect., you don’t know what your missing. It tastes a whole lot better.  And is a lot better for you.  Amazing what difference there is, when you take out all the junk.  Fortunately there is a lot of natural stuff out there right now.  There is even at least healthier junk food.

As has been mentioned, you certainly don’t look unhealthy.  But basically I think it comes down to the same thing everything comes down to.. Moderation.

  • Dude, my brother lost about 30 lb. just by giving up meat and alcohol.  And he didn’t drink that much, I don’t think.

  • “Two things you can never get too much of are sex and vegetables.”

                             –Frank Zappa

  • I’m a vegetarian. I lost 15 pounds. I don’t even exercise (not that that’s okay). I think you look fine though!

  • I have never tried the full vegetarian lifestye.  I eat very little meat, mostly chicken when I eat any kind of meat.  I think it is about balance more than anything else.

I do agree with Slade, you look great

  • @antisoccermom -
@AmeriKen - @MS_ANNA_CAM - @Adventures_of_BadNana - Honestly, I’m okay with how I look … I’m more concerned with my weight and BMI. I am *gasp* almost 200 pounds on a genetically-blessed top heavy 5’6″ frame (a woman admitting her weight!?!) I’ve lost over 20 in the past five months, which has been a MAJOR accomplishment. I’m not focusing on a more organic/more vegetarian lifestyle to simply lose weight, but to lessen the amount of pesticides and toxins I put in my body (although I also realize there are other demons and downsides to “the other side”). I am attempting to become more healthy. I am just going to utilize some of the organic/vegetarian practices that I can make work (especially in a down economy) while getting my body in the best place I can. Exercise, eating in moderation and good judgement will always be number one in this huge lifestyle change.

With all of this said, I ABSOLUTELY appreciate your kind words. I’m kinda blushing over here.

  • @SladeTheGreyFox - Stupid comment on separate pages … I replied to the lovely words you all have been saying … see reply above.

  • Jen you are a beautiful lady inside and out. I am so happy that you are concerned about your weight while you are young. In our late 30′s and 40′s is when the health related issues really start surfacing such as diabetes, joint problems, heart problems.

I am thin but I do have to watch what I eat. I also exercise . What I learned is that portion control, less sugar and just 20 minutes of exercise can keep you in shape. It has to be a lifestyle and many people just “diet” and then when the diet is over go back to their old eating habits.

I am not a big advocate of a totally vegetarian diet. I think moderation and alternating food is important.
Best of luck! You can do it!!!!

  • I just saw you on blogged.com. How are you going to rate yourself a 9.9??? You’re totally a ten. You’re golden! You’re awesome! You’re money, baby! MONEY!!!

(sorry, I just saw the movie “Swingers”.)

  • @Lithium98 - Steak SAUUUCE!!!

(Totally thought of you tonight … our show was on!)

  • as long as you feel good, i don’t object. also stay safe.
we think you’re beautiful no matter what.

  • Good luck, I hope you find the balance that’s right and healthy for you. What more can a SB ask for?

  • I’ve read some of skinny bitch… Straight to the point and honestly brutal. They make a lot of valid points. From reading that, I eat less meat and more veggies and fruit.

  • I heard fasting once a week is a good way to clean your system.

    Who knows. I’m a food addict. [x

I want to try eating better.
    I tried one summer.
It lasted though the summer, only.

    =/

  • We eat a most veggie diet. I can send you some really cool recipes. Check out Mediterranean cooking. It is very flavorful. You should also think about gardening, even if it’s only and herb garden in pots in the windows.

I am with you. There is something about a rack of ribs or a hand made hamburger.

  • As for the “Bitch” part…. I am one step ahead of you:)

  • I do this about 4 times a year for about a week to two weeks (going vegan).
and that only due to buddhist cleansing practices..

and well not to sound all smart and fartsy in this subject…but

i find myslef healthier when i try to just keep the best of both worlds…

going vegan for a bit, but staying true to my other food groups…

  • Love your picture- pretty then & pretty now! I think that you can reach your goals! I like your reading materials. I would also probably suggest The Eat Clean Diet Book by Tosca Reno. It’s not a ‘diet book’ persay…it’s a lifestyle.

It was hard for me to eat clean at first but after the first 2 weeks things started to get easier, and it has become a lifestyle for me now.

You can do it! I am here to support you on your journey to health & happiness!

  • Sigh.

Okay, I really can’t jump on the bandwagon here. I wish I could, because I’m gonna get booed for this. “Organic” foods are no better for you, and possibly are more harmful, than “regular” foods.

Here is a quote from a longer article:

” … certain molds (fungi) on vegetables and grains can be hazardous even when the infestation is not visible to the naked eye. Mold toxins, or mycotoxins, are often carcinogenic and much more harmful than any pesticide. Mycotoxins accumulate, but the residues of pesticides that were applied to the young, vulnerable plant decrease around harvest, usually to undetectability.” (Emphasis is mine.)

Here is the link to the article. It’s pretty long, but it has some very important things to say.

I won’t argue the “vegetarian” angle, since if done properly, vegetarianism doesn’t adversely affect health. But if you already have health issues, there is no point inviting more problems into your life by eating diseased food products.

It’s great that you want to lose weight and get in shape! Yay, you! But don’t over-react out of guilt, okay? You didn’t do anything to cause your miscarriage. Blaming your weight or your diet is easier to live with, I guess, because those are variables that you have some control over. This way, you feel, you can prevent this happening to you and your husband again, when you are really ready to be parents. But in reality, these are very small factors.

If you have fears over future pregnancies, that is totally understandable. Totally!!! But – talk to your doctor, okay? I’m pretty sure s/he will say pretty much the same thing I have. And may have other suggestions that will be a whole lot safer and less expensive than eating “organic” foods.

I’m sorry for seeming so brutal … I really am. But it just breaks my heart to see you blame yourself for things that are not factors in what happened.

  • good luck with that, Jen!…i only know one vegan…my former bass player weighed in at over 350, before becoming a vegan…he is now under 180…his drastic change was spurred on due to becoming a diabetic…i couldn’t do it, as i love red meat too much…i am a vegetable freak, so my diet is pretty balanced…i still need to lose weight…who new brandy wasn’t a food group?..heh

  • I have to admit that though I’ve lost over 100 pounds since late 2006, the weight loss has kinda stalled lately. So If you do go vegetarian/vegan you will have to let me know how it goes.

  • Love it! Fabulous goal. I’ve already started eating less meat and I’ve noticed some changes in my skin clearing up, I’m less cranky, and I’ve been loving all the delicious fruit I’ve been eating.

  • Congrats on the weight you have lost so far!

I’m a vegetarian and very recently (five weeks ago) cut out all animal products. So, I suppose that means I am eating a vegan diet now, but it still seems odd to say. I wouldn’t say that I am healthier because I stopped eating meat, but avoiding meat required me to read up on nutrition to see what I was missing and I all around eat better food now. Learning about nutrition is the first step to eating healthier.

I am all for eating organic food too. The majority of the food I buy is organic. I also look to avoid corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and anything that just has an absurd amount of ingredients. If I look at a long list of things and I don’t know what a lot of them are, I usually steer clear.

Anywho, good luck with the healthier eating. Eating healthier definitely gives you a lot more energy and you will benefit all around from it.

  • HMMMM… I think I am with you on this…. to the kitchen dear lady… we are on a mission! :)

  • i have skinny bitch and the students
vegetarian cook book (i myself am vegetarian). Skinny bitch is really
just a shock tactic book to try and get you to go vegan but i really
like the student vegetarian cook book cause even though im out of
college im still very poor and in that mindset a lot of the times.

    One
of the perks from when i went vegetarian was my health. I just felt a
hell of a lot better and when i went for my yearly check up (thank you
military) my bad cholesteral and a lot of things were lower then others
and he said it could be do to my vegetarianism (since im not taking in
as much saturated fat from meats and what not).

  • Re: Vegan.  I don’t recommend it unless you are a nutritionist/dietician because –you may know this–the 20 essential amino acids the body requires for repair and protein synthesis must be present all at the same time in your stomach to be healthy.  Animal flesh always has complete protein, even eggs or bovine lactose (milk).

And i agree with the others that you look great the way you are now, but if being skinny makes you happy by all means be happy.  I made a lifestyle of doing just what you are doing now and stayed at a perfect 140 lbs. (I’m 5′ 9″) until in 2002 i suddenly got violent headaches (migraines) when I exercised and had to just stop.  None of these quack doctors could help me and then in 2006 they suddenly just went away.  Even though i’m not a big eater, i gained weight like a shot.  This is why old jocks get fat quicker than anyone when they retire.  In 2006 i weighed 220 lbs and could barely run 2 miles on a treadmill.  I’ve gotten it down to 180, and people tell me i look fine, but i remember 140–so i guess i kind of understand, not just about what you want to be  but how this and that in nefarious combinations can get in your way.  On my way to 180 i managed to regain 18 pounds i had to lose over again.  Stay with it.  Best of luck—-Eric

  • I was a vegetarian  for 10 years, but have since gone back to eating meat. Honestly, it was too expensive a lifestyle for me, as well as sometimes it was pretty inconvenient. I never found a change in weight or periods or energy. I find that eating the right foods and potion control, rather than cutting things out, works better for me, but every body is different.

I think you look great the way you are, but I also think it’s great you want to live a healthier lifestyle. Good luck with everything, I know it always helps to have a support network!

  • those books caught my eye at target. i hope they work.

i tried going vegetarian last semester. but i think the body still needs meat. i just cut back. only chicken, fish, and turkey, and occasionally beef in small amounts. cutting out meat makes such a difference when you;re on a diet. but cutting out meat doesnt mean you dont have to still eat healthy. you still gotta eat vegetables. once you get used to eating healthy vegetables start to taste good and you dont even wanna eat meat anymore. but that’s just my experience.

but good luck to you, i wish you the best, take care and god bless you and your future baby

  • I highly recommend all organic – especially for your fruits and veggies, I actually felt a significant difference when I switched to that. Also whole grains. I’d also recommend “You on a Diet” by Dr. Oz, and the website to go with it, http://www.realage.com its free and has great tips for healthy living/eating! It has recipes and a two week jump-start meal plan too.

  • I’m working on losing a little weight myself; turned 50 last year and need to shed some unneeded pounds, but I just can’t go the vegan/vegetarian route. I love animals…their delicious! I’m going to the gym and trying to cut back on stuff. Tonight: grilled chicked and some kind of “bean salad” the wife is throwing together. YUM!

    Good luck.

  • I’ve read skinny bitch and it’s not that bad. My friend’s girlfriend thought it was hilarious but then again she’s a part time model.

  • You’re really pretty! :) And choosing to be a vegetarian will probably be the best decision you’ll ever make.

    You can do it! :D

  • Are you sure you’re overweight? Society’s standard of skinny is a female under 100 pounds, don’t fall under the false stereotype.

  • @athleticbutgirly91 - lol, yes. I’m not just overweight, I’m obese. I’m not dieting but moving to a more healthy lifestyle I have no desire to be less than 140 … 150 would be great, too!

  • @BarelyJen - oh. how much are you supposed to weigh?

  • @athleticbutgirly91 - According to my doctor, the “ideal” would be in the 120s/130s, however, being a big-busted girl, that’s not possible. I know what I look like in the 130s … it’s almost scary. So, I’m shooting for a healthy 140-155. This will help with my insomnia, RLS, achiness, depression, etc. I’m doing it for the change I can make in myself, not just to be “skinny” (because God knows I’ll never be a thin, lanky waif!)

  • I tried the vegan thing when I was in high school, but I didn’t have the right foods to keep me healthy and was scolded by my doctor to start eating more meat because I was hidieously malnutritioned.  Then I tried being a vegetarian, but I kept fish as an option.  That worked the best for me because I could still make an attempt at being an animal activist without damaging my health.  I lost a whole lot of weight when I did this, but I was also stopping by the gym everyday for at least 45 minutes.  What worked for me may not work for others, and what worked for others may not work for me. So if you want to go full blown vegan go for it!!  I love it when people consider a greener lifestyle.  Best of luck to you!

  • What you’re talking about? It’s pretty much my lifestyle.  I eat a lot of organic stuff.  I try to eat low-fat, low-sodium (I have weaknesses — like Micky D’s fries).  I’m not so hot (yet) on getting veggies & fruit every day but I’m trying to be better this year.  I drink organic non-fat milk and OJ.  I absolutely LOVE my Whole Foods AND HEB Central Market.  I checked out one of the local farmer’s markets here in Houston a couple weeks ago.  I just need to find someone to share some of the goodies with or I’ll waste a bunch of it.

My bigger problem is finding the time and energy to cook when I get home from work.  Still working on a solution…

    Good luck, sweetie!

  • LOVE the book skinny bitch!! I personally am a vegan since mid-december and I feel better, my skin looks better, and I have lost weight. I eat non-dairy organic foods that fill me up better, are way more satisfying and omg taste gooood!!! there is even vegan junk food!!! It’s totally worth it. You spend less money in the long run because you don’t eat as much, being that the food fills you up better, and your body just feels better. I had always thought whatever i could never go vegan, impossable but i’d tought about it. after I read Skinny Bitch, my life was changed. def worth it!
