  • remembering sarah marshall.

after almost six months of waiting, husband and i
FINALLY saw forgetting sarah marshall last night.

    was it worth it? totally.

for me, it was an almost-perfect blend of romantic comedy and guyish raunch.

warning: beware of full frontal male nudity — it is present and more than once (four times, to be exact. and yes, i looked. couldn’t help it!) it also has a plethora of comically captured sex scenes (oh, the positions!), so be prepared to shield sensitive eyes often.

the flick has more than a handful of good laughs, from both primary and secondary characters.

husband pointed out that the overall plight was a bit thin, but i think peter’s journey was enjoyable. fans of other apatow relationship films will probably see a number of similarities (slacker dude grows up, gross out factor, similar casting choices, etc) even though he didn’t write or direct it (producer, baby!). props to jason segal — who plays the affable marshal on HIMYM *heart* — for writing and starring!

why’d it take us this long to see it? funny story, actually.

    here’s how it began …
(this portion written april 7, 2008)

i bought alex and i tickets to see forgetting sarah marshall a MONTH ago.

last night was the big night.

to say we were looking forward to it was an understatement. alex even had to ask off work for it.

we get there. we pick up our tickets. we get in line.

line’s not too bad, maybe 50 people in front of us, but we don’t worry. the theater seats hundreds.

btw, we got in line at 6:20, and they were to start seating at 6:40. 20 minutes, no sweat.

    6:40 came and went.

    then 6:45.

    … waiting …

finally, at 6:50, they let about 30 people head up to seat.

    then nothing.

    getting antsy.

    7, still nothing.

    getting pissed.

    7:15, we’re waiting.

face stuck in constant state of scowling.

7:30, word floated down that they had already started the movie.

    WTFOMGAREYOUSERIOUSARGRAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    yeah.

turns out, afi didn’t expect many pass holders to actually show up (they get to be seated first).

and where were these magical pass holders? we didn’t see them!?!?

oh, they were in a super-special second line upstairs.

    soooooo,
we spent $17 on tickets, two gallons of gas (thanks to it being in
dallas) and $20 eating out, only to stand in line for an hour and be
    turned away. (yay, date night)

the afi people were trying to figure out what to do to calm the super-pissed people.

one woman came around and started offering up two free passes to thursday’s showing of baby mama. (at first, instead of a refund. then they wisened up, and gave passes out on top of a refund.)

are you serious?! does. not. compare.

(btw, yes, we took the free pass, on principle. not sure if i’ll go see
it or not, since it’s all the way in valley view on a thursday.)

… quarter to 8, they finally took down our info, and promised to refund our money within the week. we’ll see.

lol, alex then decided to go get matching iphones.

(you know, to ease the pain)

    thankfully, everything was closed.

end note: we just didn’t want to bother with the movie until now. sad we didn’t have these laughs sooner!

  • I personally won’t go to see movies with less than two instances of male full frontal nudity.

  • @GodlessLiberal - gosh, that’s so limiting. i think we should petition for added scenes in ALL movies.

  • yeah…the full frontal…i liked to have died…i was NOT expecting it at all…i felt like an old granny **gasp**.  haha.

  • @jediwa72 - it was almost as awkward as seeing katherine heigl’s (fake) vagina in “knocked up.”

  • I’ve been wanting to see this movie as well, but wasn’t sure if it was worth renting.  Thanks for the info, I’m definitely going to watch it now!  And just so you know, I recently saw Baby Mama, and it was hilarious!  Not sure if you ended up going to see it, but if you haven’t I would recommend it!

  • So did you or did you not see Baby Mama? I saw it a couple days ago and it was good! You should watch it if you haven’t yet.

  • @SmashleyZombie - @StewieIsMyHero - ohh, i TOTALLY watched it (again, on DVD). it rocked my face off.

  • @BarelyJen - yeah…it’s almost like it catches you so off gaurd that you’re embarassed that you just saw their privates!…but then you realize they voluntarily showed them to you…and then you think…”oh my goodness, i just paid to look at his penis (her “fake” vagina)!”  funny stuff.

  • So I get a Best Buy gift card for my bday, so I go there last night wanting to buy this movie for laughs – and they’re completely sold out.  Sure, they have it on Bluray, but why buy a comedy on Bluray?

    Sadness!

  • That’s a long wait for a movie.  And that’s why my wife and I just wait till it’s out a few weeks before going to the theaters.

  • @Chilly1004 - that’s what we usually do (we’ve got this great theater that plays movies for $2.50 a person!) but this was a special occasion — AFI Dallas. didn’t think we’d get turned away.
