  • it is time to go: gustav edition.

    gustav is coming.

new orleans mayor ray nagin and the city of new orleans is now enforcing a MANDATORY evacuation.

    the
city’s more than 239,000 residents are exoduses the city today in the face of
powerful Hurricane Gustav, which nagin called “the mother of all storms.”

    a
monstrous Category 3 to 4 storm that will most likely approach the central louisiana
coast just west of new orleans on monday.

“you need to be concerned and you need to get your butts moving and
out of here right now,” nagin said at city hall. “this is the
    storm of the century.”

    just a refresher:
category one — winds 74-95 miles per hour
category two — winds 96-110 miles per hour
category three — winds 111-130 miles per hour
category four — winds 131-155 miles per hour
category five — winds greater than 155 miles per hour

as of now, gustav has gone down to a category three hurricane (from four and a brief five standing) BUT that doesn’t diminish the dangers of the storm. in fact, they are predicting it to go back up to a cat. 4 before it makes landfall tomorrow morning.

another interesting thing of note from nagin: looting will simply NOT be tolerated. offenders will be sent straight to angola prison. no city stay, no excuses, nothing except a trip straight to prison with the general population. people better think hard before they steal their neighbor’s shoes.

get the hell out of dodge.
most of my louisiana family are on their way out of the city as we speak. i’m not sure where they’ll all end up (some in alabama, some in kansas, most in northern louisiana), but please keep them — and all the evacuees — in your prayers.

my nephews are scared beyond all reason. they are old enough to remember katrina (they didn’t evacuate far enough) and are terrified of the natural disaster that is heading straight for them.

what does that mean for the republican convention?
for now, we know that bush and cheney will not be there. whether the convention spans four days or a mere two hours has yet to be decided.

i agree with the news casters: if gustav is any sort of destructive, the convention will receive little-to-no coverage. in a bittersweet way, this could work to republican’s advantage (they can concentrate their strengths into the smaller windows of coverage, and sweep away their weaknesses, thanks to the altered time frame).

we’ll see how everything plays out in the morning. God speed, evacuees, and stay safe!

  • lots to do today …

i was so looking forward to a long weekend of nothingness, but it looks like i’ve got a full agenda.

since alex is working ALL WEEKEND LONG, stevie is coming up to help me with a few things. he rocks!

ideally, i’d like to get the following done today:

    • grocery shopping
    • pick up my prescriptions
    • get my new glasses
    • do the returns for fashion bug, penney’s and kohl’s
    • clean out kitchen
    • vacuum
    • make dinner
    • lots of other stuff i can’t even remember atm. gah!

    we’ll see how far i get …

hope everyone is having a great saturday!

  • the takeover!!!!

It is I, the husband! I have taken over the blog of BarelyJen! Why you may ask!?!?!?! Because I can (and she forgot to log off on the laptop and I got in). Now I would like to take this time for something that means a lot to me. It’s something that not a lot of people are prepared for and cause harm to them and others around them. It about Zombies, the silent killers of the night.

A zombie is not one of the living anymore, they hold on to no part of their past. They are not the people you once knew. They will attack and kill you, and if they don’t eat all of you, you will become one of them. Zombies are slow moving so speed is on your side.

The basics of surviving a zombie attack. Be silent, move fast, if someone is bitten do them a favor and end it while they are still human….and a sword doesn’t need reloading. If you can get to a second level of a building and destroy all paths to it from the first floor. Fill a bath tub with water right away, you never know when the water will go out. Ear plugs are going to be helpful against the constant moans of the living dead.

Now you may be thinking “But Alex, I’m got my own zombie plan and I know all my escape routes to the safe high grounds where I have months and months of food and supplies.” Thats great, but what happens after months of the zombie apocolypse? After killing……re-killing your friends and loved ones? You need to get back into a functioning society, but after such a long time by yourself or a small band of wanderers, you might not be able to slip back into the swing of things. Don’t worry, I am here to help.

You need to make sure you have good labor skills, plumbing, wood work, metal working, farming and so on. Being a history major isn’t going to help you anymore. Being able to list all the actors that played the doctor in “Dr. Who” won’t help you fight off the swarms of the undead. Prepare yourself, pick up good skills. Always remember: one less of us, is one more of them.

  • repost: it’s time for campaignin’

  • just sayin …

obviously the chatter of the day is about sarah palin.

it’s been bothering me all morning: why does she look SO familiar?!

    oooooh, THAT’S why!

tina fey and sarah palin: two very beautiful women!

  • exactly what this race needs …

    … a shake-up.

and by gosh, we got one this morning.

  • on edge.

it could just be the caffeine i’ve consumed, but i’m really on edge this morning.

    anxiety, it’s a bitch.

some major things could be in the works today, so let’s hope they pan out on the side of good. lol, i’d even take “not happening at all” over the bad side …

    fingers crossed for me.

  • “why obama?” issues edition.

i have posted often about my respect for barack obama and why he is the candidate for me.

i’ve shared with you my experiences with voting and caucusing.

however, i realize that i haven’t posted much on the issues, and what they mean to me.

so, i’ve picked out a few to share with you. obama:

strongly favors requiring the hiring of more women and minorities.
as a woman, this is uber-important. obama wants to fight job discrimination to give women EQUAL footing at work. he wants to better enforce our pay equity with the “equal pay act.” i have experienced first-hand that things just aren’t as equal as they should or could be for women. we get passed over for promotions and raises simply because of our gender. i am more accomplished than some of my co-workers, but because they are men, and have a “family” to provide for (read: no kids), they get paid THOUSANDS more than me.

    favors same-sex domestic partnership benefits.
i am PROUD to know several gays and lesbians — several in my own family. they deserve the same benefits of union between two people that i am lucky to enjoy. “homosexuality is not a choice, and it’s no more immoral than heterosexuality.” everyone deserves to have the same opportunities, so this is something i am definitely standing behind.

strongly favors more federal funding for health coverage.
obama will make available a new national health plan to all Americans, including the self-employed and small businesses, to buy affordable health coverage that is similar to the plan available to members of Congress. its features include: guaranteed eligibility; comprehensive benefits; affordable premiums, co-pays and deductibles; simplified paperwork and reined in health costs; portability and choice; quality and efficiency.

strongly favors replacing coal and oil with alternatives.
obama plans to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 by implementing an economy-wide cap-and-trade program. most importantly, he plans to CRACK DOWN ON EXCESSIVE ENERGY SPECULATION. why did your gas prices DOUBLE since 2001? mostly because of the speculators. (when they were called out for excessive speculation last month, the price of gas dropped almost 70¢!!)

favors a woman’s right to choose.
i am not posting this stance to begin a debate on abortion. i DO NOT personally agree with abortion. it is not for me, and again i say, i am not pro-abortion. i am, however, all for giving a woman the right to choose, and that’s what obama is for, too. who are we to definitively cut off a women’s right to choose what is right for her? if she wants to abort her unborn child, that is something she will have to live with the rest of her life, and will have to answer to in Heaven. the reasons are her own, the situations sometime extreme … simply, it’s not for us to decide.

favors taking the US out of iraq.
i have had too many friends go overseas for months, if not years, at a time. two, three, four tours in iraq, and there’s no sign of it stopping under the republican’s “we’re in it til we win it” mentality. we need to get out. we are spending $12 BILLION dollars a month on the war in iraq, and for what? you could give me half-assed answers, but no one really knows anymore.

strongly favors stricter limits on political campaign funds.
obama is the FIRST presidential candidate to refuse lobbyist and PAC money. he is blazing the trail to the white house with his own money, and with donations from his supporters. it’s commendable. he can’t be bought.

as i’ve said before (particularly on stephaniemarie‘s site today), you can vote for whomever you want, as long as you’re informed!

you wouldn’t buy a car without researching it,

you wouldn’t get married without getting to know the person first,

and you wouldn’t take a job without learning about the company.

if you do, then it’s your own fault, and you have no reason to bitch.
(i’m retaining my right to bitch, thankyouverymuch.)

learn more about obama here and here. | learn more about mccain here. (don’t say i’m not equal opportunity)

  • she’s got great points to make, as always.

we may have some differing political views, but when it comes down to it, we both agree that people need to be INFORMED!!

  • what i see = me.

here’s a little something i put together over at my virtual model. (thanks CRE13 for inspiring me!!)

MVM is a nifty site that allows you to build your virtual self, and try on actual clothing. it’s supposed to help you shop without having to leave the house.

while it lessens the pain of trying on clothes in-person, it still doesn’t do the shopping experience justice. meh.

it’s difficult to see my ever-changing self in the mirror every morning, but even tougher to see it here. i think that i can be too critical of what i THINK i see, and not complement myself on what is actually there.

i guess i need to work on that.
